WHO AM I

Hi, I am Narayan Acharya, Machine Learning Engineer @ dMetrics, helping make good decisions by helping gather insights from unstructured text documents. I completed my Masters degree in Computer Science in December ‘20 from Stony Brook University where I developed an academic background in Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision and Data Science that has come in handy at work.

I earned a Bachelors degree in Information Technology from University of Mumbai in May ‘15. My professional experiences after undergrad have been in Software Engineering building high-performance, robust and scalable server-side applications as well native mobile applications for Android and iOS.

I spent a lot of time taking MOOCs when I was pursuing my undergraduate degree on topics like Python Fundamentals, Game Programming with C# and also Android Programming. I prefer using Coursera for my MOOCs. I would like to spend more time on this but unfortunately cannot these days.

I like to play outdoor sports like Cricket and Football, the European version. I also like Chess, but have not played in a long time.

I love to pet dogs when I see them. I like cats too, but I like dogs more :)

WHY THIS WEBSITE

I plan to use this primarily as a log book to keep track of things I have worked on and am learning about. Hopefully, in near future, I will add articles/posts on topics I have been learning about recently and maybe topics from the past and what I have learnt from them and where I have applied them.

CAREER IN BRIEF

Currently at dMetrics, I am helping make good decisions by helping gather insights from unstructured text documents using fundamentals of Natural Language Processing, Deep Learning and Data Science in general. I am fortunate to get to partner with some really smart folks as part of the research team at dMetrics. My time at Stony Brook during my Masters has helped immensely in pursuing this opportunity.

Before I joined Stony Brook, I was an Associate(Software Engineer) at JP Morgan Chase & Co. where I worked on multiple technologies, tools and frameworks building post-trade risk application for calculation and monitoring portfolio metrics for clients and traders.

Prior to that I was the Lead Android Developer for a fast-paced budding startup, LiveFiesta, in Mumbai. This is where I picked a lot of skills, not just with technology and software development but also people-skills, from managing and guiding interns to customer-focused product development in terms of UI/UX research.

I partnered with a couple of my friends after my bachelors degree to build a technology services company, TechGenium. Although, we made a lot of mistakes and could not keep the business running for more than a year, the experiences and the lessons learned from that one year have made me a better person, both technically and professionally.
